Insights from the Executive Director

Everyone reading this who remembers NZBIO, the precursor to BioTechNZ, knows that we had our last conference in 2017, which was a huge success. Up until now we haven’t had the scale to hold another conference. However, together with old and new members, and the desire to showcase the biotech sector to New Zealand, BioTechNZ will be running the Life Science Summit in Wellington, 22-23 March 2023. We’re pleased to officially give advance notice of this must-attend event so that you can save the date in your calendar.

Please register your interest if you are thinking of attending, if you would like to be a potential sponsor or if you have ideas on content or a must-have speaker. Please contact us via the following links.

BioTechNZ news and highlights

With the news from Government this week regarding the Covid-19 Protection Framework (known as the ‘traffic light system’) including masking rules being removed (with certain masking requirements to be retained in some sectors), the good news is that networking events are full steam ahead for the rest of the year. We will continue to hold our very successful BioTech & Beers meetups, plus other in-person events, so watch your inbox for further notifications.

We are all super proud of our very own biotech member and ex-NZBIO CEO Will Barker, who is walking the walk when it comes to game-changing innovation. Mint Innovation has just been in the news: Kiwi cleantech Mint Innovation opens Sydney biorefinery. Hopefully we don’t lose them to Australia because of our archaic gene editing laws. Is it LanzaTech all over again?

BioTechNZ Life Sciences Summit 2023
Biotech for a better tomorrow | 22-23 March 2023, Wellington

This inaugural event brought to you by BioTechNZ will unite Aotearoa New Zealand’s life sciences and biotech communities across all sectors, including agriculture, environment, industrial as well as human health. Our objective is to recognise the advantages in life sciences when complemented with biotech. These future partnerships would be on track to start to solve some of the biggest challenges we face on our planet. The summit will showcase both current research and commercialisation opportunities, plus we front up with some of the challenges that New Zealand companies face when going global.

BIO USA 2023
BioTechNZ is looking into the possibility of having a stand at BIO USA 2023. If we think this is a viable option, we will be looking for companies, universities and CRI who are interested in financially supporting us and having a presence on the New Zealand stand.
